Adding additional memory to the Novell N286A & N286B file servers
The Novell N286A server comes delivered with one megabyte of
memory on the mother board. The N286B server comes with two
megabytes of memory on the motherboard. Additional memory may be
added to either of these machines by using some ofthe memory boards
sold for use in the IBM-PC/AT.
We have sucessfully tested the Advantage! card available from AST
Research. As the N286A server comes with one megabyte, it is
necessary to understand how the memory is configured. The first
640K of RAM is considered as base memory. The remaining 384K is
expansion memory. This 384K expansion memory starts at the one
megabyte level or 1024K. Any addition expansion memory MUST start
after this memory. This means that additional expansion memory
MUST start at 1408K. The AST Advantage! allows its memory to start
at 1408.
After correctly configuring the add-on memory board to start at
1408K, run the SETUP program provided with your N286A server. The
base memory need not bechanged. Configure the expansion memory
size taking the total number of memory onthe add-on card plus 384K.
This will give you the total expansion memory size.
The procedure for the N286B server is the same except that it
already has 1408K of expansion memory in it. Therefore, any
additional memory that is added MUST start at 2432K. Note that
some add-on memory boards will only allow selections in increments
of 512K and therefore are not suitable for use on the Novell N286A
& N286B servers.
